PROJECT OBJECTIVES The purpose of this project was to implement a growing season at the Sea Girt National Guard Training Facility.
THEORETICAL BACKGROUND AND PROJECT RATIONALE Seabeach amaranth is a federally threatened native New Jersey plant species. All over the Atlantic coast, Seabeach Amaranth grows and is very intolerant to crowded growing spaces. The reason they are endangered is because of habitat destruction and alteration. Three different methods were used which included, casting, seed planting, and cast/cover. The Northern and Southern Protection Areas were used for the experimental beachfront plots.
A final report summarizing the 2019 Seabeach Amaranth (Amaranthus pumilus) experimental planting season was completed. Results were presented at the 2020 Seabeach Amaranth Cooperators Meeting at the Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in January 2020. These results will be used by the NJDEP as well as other state agencies to design future amaranth planting efforts throughout the state. DELIVERABLES
